Towards the end of the series, James and Margaret face yet another devastating blow with the death of their daughter, Elsa. Shot by a Lakota warrior, Elsa's wound proves fatal despite the efforts of a local Crow tribe. In her final moments, she suggests Paradise Valley in Montana as her resting place, prompting the Duttons to settle there.
